How it all Began
The Idea
Anyone who has tried the romantic idea of sleeping overnight in alpine Utah, regardless of the season, has faced the remarkably unpleasant experience of waking up in the middle of the night, freezing. The challenge is that the gentle hug of a hammock which is so comfortable by day compacts even the best sleeping bags, and circulates cool air under your entire body. In 2017, we won the BYU Student Innovator of the Year award for a solution that would allow folks to hammock camp - the Shel.
The Growth
We launched a successful kickstarter campaign in August of 2017, and spent the next two years improving the design and locking down our manufacturing process. We're in the process of incorporating feedback and design improvements into the new version of the Shel, which we hope to launch in the summer of 2021.
The Shel
Today, the SHEL is a light-weight (less than 2 lbs) hammock shelter that is designed to keep you warm while streamlining your gear. It packs small and light, perfect to slip in your backpack whether you’re going for an afternoon of hammocking, or for a couple of days camping and adventuring. It is deigned to protect you against all the elements. The SHEL is waterproof with an integrated underquilt, it’s ventilated, and has IR-reflective lining. It meets all the necessities for your hammock camping experience.
Our Goal
At Khione Outdoor Gear, we have always been dedicated to helping everyone get outside easier. Although for many of us, the outdoors are a necessity as Edward Abbey states, we understand that there are obstacles to getting outside. We want everyone to enjoy the great outdoors as we do. We hope that our products will be a tool to all those who want to get outdoors and to all the hammock camping enthusiasts like us.
